First Church of Evans Being Reviewed for Historic Landmark Status

Derby, NY -- September 16, 2004 - The First Church of Evans, established in 1818, is under consideration for addition to the New York State Register of Historic Landmarks. If accepted to the register, the First Church of Evans would join Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff Estate as historic landmarks in the Evans area.

Currently the church building, community house and manse are undergoing many needed repairs, including replacement of the brick front steps, portico repairs, roof replacement, chimney repointing, plumbing work, and insulation. Every effort is being made to remain true to the original construction materials and workmanship. Modern building materials, while less expensive, would compromise the historic integrity of the property and potentially jeopardize the application to the Register of Historic Landmarks.

The current restoration efforts will require a temporary removal of four portico columns. Located at the intersection of Route 5 and Sturgeon Point Rd in Derby the columns will be on display in the front lawn. For more information or to support the renovation effort, please contact the Church office at 947-5419.
